immune system support

about a month ago, both boys came down with the nasties. stuffy nose. runny nose. terrible horse coughs. just plain yucky around here. this year has definitely been different from pasts. hayden is now in school, and you know how that goes. GERMS. we do many things around here to help boost our immune systems, from our diet, to vitamins; including an immunity boosting blend for the boys,  and diffusing and rubbing on those essential oils. and mainly for this reason; to keep the sickies at bay.

i remember first hearing about elderberry syrup [a natural remedy of colds +flu] during hayden’s first winter from a sweet friend. fast forward a few years and i am so embarrassed to admit that i finally whipped up my first batch for our home. i honestly don’t know why i waited so long because it was incredibly easy to make. and now we have two full jars, that should last us quite a while.

elderberry syrup


  • 2/3 cup dried black elderberries
  • 3 1/2 cups of water
  • 2 tablespoons fresh ginger root
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 cup raw honey


  1. mix water, elderberries, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves into medium saucepan
  2. bring mixture to a boil and then cover and reduce to a simmer. simmer until liquid has reduced by half. this will be anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour.
  3. remove from heat and let cool.
  4. mash berries using a spoon and then pour through a strainer into a glass jar or bowl [i mashed the berries again one last time once in strainer to get all the extra juices out]
  5. let liquid cool to lukewarm and add honey. stir well.
  6. store in glass jar in the fridge.
  7. standard does is 1/2 teaspoon -1 teaspoon for children daily and 1/2 tablespoon – 1 tablespoon for adults daily. if the cold/flu strikes, you can take a dose every 2-3 hours.

elderberries come from the sambucis nigra plant and are naturally high in immune boosting compounds. the berries have been shown to help avoid and also speed up the recovery of cold + flu sickness.  and of course like anything, can be purchased in health food stores. however, you will save so much money from making it yourself at home. recipe from wellness mama.
